KOI  NAMES

Kohaku  (oo-hah-ku): White Koi with bold red pattern. The most popular variety of Koi .

Sanke (sawn-kay): White koi with red (Kohaku) pattern and black (sumi) markings on the upper half of the body. Black stripes occasionally seen on the pectoral fins or tail. Usually no black on the head.

Showa (sho-wah): Black, red and white Koi. Black  appears bands  around the body. Black is often seen at the  base of the pectoral fins (motoguro) and on the head. All three colors on the head.

Shiro Utsuri (she-ro  oot-sir-ee): Black and white Koi. Black appears as bands around the body. Black on some portion of the head and motoguro on the pectoral fins is desirable.

Hi Utsuri (he-oot-sir-ee): Red and black Koi.

Ki Utsuri (key-oot-sir-ee): Yellow and black Koi.

Gin Shiro Utsuri (kin sheer-oh oot-sir-ee): Metallic Shiro Utsuri.

Kin Ki Utsuri (kin key oot-sir-ee): Metallic golden, yellow, or copper colored Utsuri.

Bekko (beh-koh): white Koi with black spots on the upper half of the body (on the back above the lateral line). The black will not be on the head but will be from the shoulders back to the tail.

Aka Bekko (ah-ka beh-ko): Red koi with black spots instead of white and black.

Asagi (ah saw-gee): Light blue or grey scaled Koi with dark blue or black reticulation of the scales, and orange or red pectorals and red below the lateral line.

Shusui (shoo-sue-ee): The doitsu (German) version of the Asagi. The red can be higher on the body. Large zipper like scales run along the top of the Koi from head to tail.

Tancho Kohaku ( tawn-choe oo-hah-ku) :  A white koi with a single red crown like marking in the center of the head and no other red on the body.

Tancho Showa (tawn-choe sho-wah): Showa with a single red spot on the head and no other red on the body.

Tancho Sanke (tawn-choe sawn-kay): Sanke with a single red spot on the head and no other red on the body.

Goshiki (go-she-key):  Whit Koi with a red Kohaku like pattern and black reticulation on the scales.

Old Style Goshiki : The old style has heavy black reticulation on both red and white scales.

New Style Goshiki: The new style has more white showing and the reticulation  on the white is more of a light grey. Little or no reticulation  seen on the red.

Koromo (koh-roe-moh): A white Koi with red pattern and black, grey or blue reticulation (sharp quarter moon edging) on the red scales.

Ai Goromo (eye goh-row-moe) : The reticulation on the red scales has a blue cast.

Sumi Goromo (sue-me go-row- moe): The reticulation is black and heavier than the Ai Goromo.

Budo Goromo: (boo-doe go-row-moe)): The reticulation on the red scales gives a purplish or grape colored appearance.

Platinum Ogon (oh-gon): White solid color metallic Koi.

Yamabuki Ogon: (yah-mah-boo-key oh-gon): Yellow solid metallic Koi.

Orengi Ogon (oh-ren- oh-gon): Orange Ogon.

Kin Matsuba (kin maht-sue-bah):  Ogon with black reticulation.

Gin Shiro Utsuri (kin sheer-oh oot-sir-ee) : Metallic Shiro Utsuri.

Kin  Showa (kin sho-wah) Metallic Showa.

Kin Ki Utsuri (kin key oot-sir-ee): Metallic golden, yellow or copper colored Utsuri.

HIKARI MOYO (He-kah-ree moy-oh): metallic Koi with a pattern.

     Hariwake (hair-eh wah-key):  A metallic white Koi with yellow or orange patches.

     Kujaku : A metallic white Koi with red/orange patches and black reticulation on the scales).  

     Kikusui (key-koo-sue-ee): A doitsu (German) metallic white Koi with red or deep orange pattern.

     Yamatonishiki (Yah-mah-toe-neh-she-key):

                                 A  metallic white Koi with red or orange patches and black spots on the back. 

KAWARIGOI (ka-wah-ree-goy)

      Kumonryu (Dragon Koi) (koo-mohn-roo):

          A black and white scaleless Koi on which the pattern changes throughout the year.

      Beni Kumonryu ( ben-ee-koo mon-roo): Kumonryu with red.

      Kikokuryu (key-koh-koo-roo): Metallic kumonryu.

          A black and white Koi with a pattern that can change throughout the year.

      Beni Kikokuryu (ben-ee key-koh-koo-roo): Metallic Beni Kumonryu.

KAWARIGOI

       Haijiro (hi-jeer-oh): Black Koi with white on the tips of the pectoral fins.

       Benigoi (ben-ee-goy): Non-metallic solid color red Koi.

       Matsukawa Bakke (maht-soo kah-wah-bah-key):

           Black and white Koi. Predecessor to the Kumonryu. (A Kumonryu with scales.)

       Ochiba Shigure (oh-chee-buh she-goo-rah)

           A grey or blue bodied Koi with chocolate brown or rust pattern, often showing a reticulation on the scales like the Asagi.

       Chagoi (chah-goy):  Non-metallic solid brown, tan (tea colored) or olive green Koi.

       Kigoi (key-goy):  Non-metallic solid yellow Koi

       Karasu (kah-raj-soo): Non-metallic solid black Koi, often called a crow Koi.

       Midorigoi (me-doe-ree-goy): Non-metallic solid green Koi

       Soragoi (sor-oh goy): Non-metallic solid gray Koi
