There will come a time when you will have to treat one or more of your fish. You'll fine that this method works great; however you will learn that there are numerous different methods for everything pertaining to Koi keeping.  It is important that you find what works best for you and stick to it.

Wear your latex gloves to protect yourself and your Koi and the safety glasses are to protect  your eyes from the chemicals used in treatment of your Koi.

You will need two Koi bowls. add pond water to both. In one bowl, you will add five drops (don't add any more) of clove oil per gallon of pond water. The clove oil will sedate your Koi so that you can treat their wounds. It is very important that you measure the amount of water and oil correctly, you will need enough water to cover the gills, and this will depend on the size of your Koi. Your Koi will roll over on its side when sedation is achieved and you will be able to handle them without any wiggle, this could take one minute to five minutes.  DO NOT WALK AWAY FROM YOUR KOI DURING ANY TREATMENT PROCESS, LET THE PHONE RING, THEY WILL CALL BACK. Beware, that your Koi might try to jump. Cover bowls with net, to prevent any further injury.

After the Koi is completely sedated, you can then lift him/her out of the clove oil water with your hands, no net and place on your old towels that you have gotten wet with clean pond water, with their heads pointing towards your body. A word of caution, Koi are know to revive  quite quickly, speed is the essence. Rinse the wound with Hydrogen Peroxide using the eye dropper, being very careful not to let any treatment liquid flow into the gill area. Dry the would very well with paper towels, dip your Q-Tip into the liquid Potassium  Permanganate and clean the would thoroughly with the Q-Tip and Potassium.

Return your Koi  to the second bowl with pond water  and slowly move the Koi around in the bowl to help revive them. Once the Koi starts to come around a little, this is a good time to return them to the pond. Using a net, keep them from sinking to the bottom of the pond and hold them in the waterfall area so that they are getting maximum oxygenation. Remember never lift a Koi out of the water using a net.

Acriflavine or Iodine - can be used when the injury is slight, like  your Koi lost a scale, tiny scratch or other minor injury that is not red and angry. This can be done without sedation, get Koi into Koi bowl  floating on pond and apply a little Acriflavine or Iodine with a Q-Tip. However, with good water quality minor injuries should heal within a couple days by themselves.

When using Potassium Permanganate, do not make the paste too thick or you can burn the Koi. Better yet, make into a liquid form.
